The Building 180 Blohm & Voss in Hamburg was a four-masted barque of 3020BRT and port 4425 t. built on behalf of the owner F.Laeisz, Hamburg, whose firm became famous around the world as the “Flying P Line.” This proud building became the 51st of the fleet which the names of all the units, with some exceptions departure, beginning with P, and chose the nickname “flying P” thanks to its speed.
On the 3rd August 1941 the Finnish barque Pamir was seized by the New Zealand government, which regarded Finland as ‘territory in enemy occupation’. Due to wartime shipping shortages, the ship was pressed into service as a New Zealand merchant vessel, mainly carrying wool and tallow to San Francisco and Vancouver. The ship was managed by the Union Steam Ship Company.
Despite some suggestions that it be retained as a sail-training vessel for the New Zealand merchant navy, the Pamir was handed back to its Finnish owners in 1948. It later became a training vessel for the German navy and foundered with heavy loss of life during an Atlantic hurricane in 1957.
Great classic model with a NZ flavor this is a reproduced older kit, all molds are clear of flashing which usually plagues the older molds and has some excellent details. This kit is 755mm long and has 732 pieces so is suitable for an experienced Modeler.
