This pirate themed Ships Crest complete with his scarf,eye patch and earrings has been made in our studio in very limited numbers so you wont see them in everybody’s man cave or bar room. It measures 6 5/8” 168 mm wide and 8” 203 mm tall.

They have been cast in an acrylic polymer modified plaster for added strength they are then painted in a gold metallic lacquer and glued to a Kauri polished backing board, ready to hang on your wall.

If you wanted you could personalize them by painting in a little more of the detail in your favorite colours.

The original crests were made on board ship, by the dentist, painted by an artistic crew member and sold to the crew members as souvenirs, or so my brother in law told me, he was Captains Secretary on the Black Prince in the Med.

The tradition developed from the end of the 19th century, after distinguishing features such as figureheads and gilding decoration were discouraged or banned by several navies as they sought a more standardized form of identification.

Naval heraldry commonly takes the form of a badge, seal, crest, or coat of arms designed specifically for a ship, which in Commonwealth navies is a plaque, referred to as the ship’s badge, mounted on the superstructure of the ship, and in the United States Navy is known as the ship’s seal or ship’s crest.

An item of naval heraldry is seen as the identifying logo of the vessel, and is commonly reproduced on hats, stationery, trophies, souvenirs, and gifts relating to that particular ship. In some navies, the ship’s badge can also displayed on the tampions which protect or covers for the gun muzzles when they are not in use.
