Duchess Of Argyle Immigrant 1842 Ship In A bottle
Price: NZ$320.82
Code: UNQ 00286
This unique vintage Ship in bottle of the Immigrant ship Duchess of Argyle, is constructed in the traditional style with a turbulent blue ocean. It is a nicely made model by Paul Toth. It has a beautifully crafted rimu stand to hold the bottle safely. This is a model of a 3 Masted Ship with sails. The bottle is a Teachers Whiskey bottle and is 14 1/2” 370 mm long on the stand and 4 1/2” 115 mm tall.
Duchess Of Argyle was part of the first planned shipment of free UK migrants to Auckland. Arriving in Auckland harbour 1842, disembarking via ships boats in Mechanics Bay at low tide, the boats could not reach the shore. Passengers had to unload their boxes and bundles, carry them through mud and water to land with the passengers off the Jane Gifford which arrived the same day.
It could be a lovely piece to grace any study, library, office or holiday retreat or maybe this ship was part of your families history.
The technique of putting ships into bottles developed during the early years of the 19th century in the forecastles of the old sailing ships; in an era when sea voyages lasted months and years, and entertainment was self-evolved, with whatever materials were at hand. The skill has continued to be popular particularly with sailors or people involved with seafaring. These wonderful bottles are time capsules for someone’s memories, sealed away and protected by the surrounding bottle. Boathouse Collectables only deal in unique bottles which we restore and sell through our electronic shop. We also complete private commissions for new works. If you’re interested please contact us.
