This is a beautifully detailed model made by the highly regarded maker Carlo Marquardt has been long out of production. The reefer Perseus is part of the Laeisz ‘Flying P’ Line Of Hamburg (pronounded ‘Lyze’) it is a very famous name in German shipping, and is particularly renowned for their fleet of 86 big sailing ships, 66 of which had names beginning with the letter ‘P’ including ‘Pamir’. German shipowners were prevented by the victorious Allies from trading or owning deep sea ships until 1950, only coastal vessels under special circumstances were allowed. Laeisz ordered three replacement fruit ships in 1950 from the Deutsche Werft yard in Hamburg and the Howaldtswerke yard in Kiel for delivery in 1951 they were Pegasus, Perseus and Proteus of 4,500 dwt. The trio was followed by another eight similar ships by 1960 named Parnass, Pelion, Perikles, Portunus, Parthenon, Piraeus, Priamos and Pentelikon keeping up the ‘P’ naming tradition they had accommodation for up to a dozen passengers. Their refrigerated machinery comprised three ammonia plants with twelve compressors working in each of the three holds and manufactured by Bergedorfer Eisenwerk. A fast speed of twenty two knots was provided by six cylinder 2SCDA oil engines by M.A.N. manufactured at Augsburg.
