This is a beautifully detailed model made by the highly regarded maker Mercator has been long out of production it is a vintage model. Built for Hamburg-South American Line. Hamburg-east coast of South America service. Maiden voyage 19 Nov 1927 Hamburg-La Plata. Became a German naval accommodation ship, 1940 at Gotenhafen (Gdynia). In 1945 she transported 36,000 people to the west in three voyages during the evacuation of German eastern territories. In Apr she embarked 5,000 prisoners from the Neuengamme concentration camp, along with 1,000 crew and guards. Attacked by British fighter-bombers, 3 May and caught fire. Capsized only a few hundred yards from shore, but over 5,000 perished. Wreckage broken up after the war. Model is in fair used condition, mast and derricks are not original, missing its rear mast and derricks and some additional painting has been carried out on the rear decks in green, see the images, we have cleaned it as this collection was poorly stored by the previous owner. Approx. 170mm long or 6 3/4”
