US Navy Ships Binnacle WW2 Era
Price: NZ$429.73
Code: BH1101
US Navy Ships Binnacle 1943 era, U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships, 3-5” Domehead Binnacle, Beck-Lee Corp, Chicago. The compass is housed in a heavy cast brass housing with removable hood which could be highly polished if you wanted to as its all brass.
The compass in this binnacle is not the original, its missing a ring on its gimble and is a much earlier dry card type of compass by Hemsley London. The base has been repainted at some stage but the navy grey still shows inside the binnacles base.
The helmet shaped lid features a pair of sliding front doors with knob handles and fits tight onto the bottom compass housing. The lid is held on with a pair of brass screw clamps located on each side of the housing.
The binnacle measures 13 ½ inches in diameter 345mm and stands 13 ½ inches to the top of the removable lid 345mm. The compass measures 5 1/2 inches 135mm in diameter. See all the images for condition there are a few dents and scratches in the housing, the adjuster balls are missing but the brackets are there and are also made from brass.
This is a nice piece but has been altered over time as we have described by a pervious owner. Could make a nice table lamp if it was polished and lit from underneath.
