Masters Army & Navy Safety Match Cover Road Safety Series Number 2 Alternate

Front and back covers with one striking panel.

Cross Here- Not There, RIP

Obviously road safety is not a new thing as these match boxes date somewhere around WW2 as Bryant & May combined with J. John Masters & Co. Ltd in 1927 until then Masters was operating the Abbey Match Works, Barking, Essex. The match works opened as JonKoping & Vulcan’s Abbey Match Works in 1908-1910. In 1919 The match works were taken over by JJ Masters and then, in 1927, they became part of the British Match Corporation Ltd. By 1921 it employed 530 workers, the most of any of the industries in Barking. These covers date between the 1927 takeover and the late 1940’s.

Phillumeny is the hobby of collecting different match-related items: matchboxes, matchbox labels, matchbooks, matchcovers etc. These may be suitable for your collection, or you may just want to frame a few for a display in a themed room or part of your home.

They were an everyday item common in our social history and also an interesting part of our advertising development using packaging, to relate information and messages.

If we have more than one of the cover pictured and that one has been sold, you will always get the best conditioned cover we have available. As they are used match box covers there will be some charring present where matches were struck while being used.
