A Personal Anthology of Men and Ships by Alan Villiers

The thoughts and experiences of a great seaman a sailing ship master whose life has fulfilled his childhood dreams when he gazed at the tall Cape Horners at the end of a Melbourne street. 40 b/w photos by the author highlight his writings on his own personal experiences at sea over several decades, spanning both world wars as well as being a member of the first whaling expedition in the Ross Sea under the Norwegian Carl Larsen (1923-4). In 1934 he bought a Danish school ship, renamed her “Joseph Conrad” and sailed her 58,000 miles around the world in two years. In 1957 he sailed the Mayflower replica to the USA. He was in command of the square-rigged ships for the films: Moby Dick, John Paul Jones, and Billy Budd.
