This helicopter is well known for its high reliability and robustness its present in the skies around the world since the mid-60s and can be considered to be the most well-known rotorcraft. Developed on behalf of the U.S. Army during the war years in Vietnam, where it worked in thousands of versions covering the roles of transport, ambulance and attack, was later manufactured under license in Italy, Germany and Japan and is popular among the Armed Forces and the Police Corps of more than fifty nations.

This aircraft is still giving great service in New Zealand and will be eventually superceeded by the NH90 currently being introduced into the RNZAF.
